The wood of kings, the koa tree was at one time so revered for its beauty and physical and medicinal properties that it could only be owned by the Hawaiian royalty. It was prized by ancient Hawaiians, particularly for making ocean-fairing canoes. “Koa” means bold, fearless, warrior-like and brace. The ancient Hawaiians felt that by making the lone voyaging vessels out of koa, those qualities would be imbued in their canoes as well as in the sailors.
